Correctional Mental Health Services, LLC
Correctional Mental Health Services, LLC (CMHS) was founded by Stephen B. Goldberg, MD in 2002 in response to a growing and unmet need for quality, comprehensive mental and behavioral healthcare services in correctional settings. CMHS developed an innovative, and cost-effective, management approach to a jail’s mentally ill population that utilized licensed providers, incorporated training of corrections officers and the use of telepsychiatry. CMHS’ management approach quickly became the standard of care throughout Maryland. In 2006, Johannes Dalmasy, MD was recruited from the State of Maryland’s only maximum security forensic psychiatric hospital to provide additional support and expertise to the growing business. On November 4, 2008, all issued and outstanding shares of Correctional Mental Health Services, LLC were acquired by Conmed Healthcare Management, Inc. (CONMED). As a result of the acquisition, CMHS became a wholly owned subsidiary of CONMED, and CMHS became the primary managing entity for all of CONMED’s mental and behavioral healthcare needs. Together, the executive management teams of CMHS and CONMED comprise over 200 years of combined experience in mental healthcare, somatic healthcare, and correctional management. Our experience encompasses not only mental and behavioral health, but also the administrative concerns of correctional facilities. CMHS recognizes the unique nature of the correctional setting and promotes cooperation with the correctional staff in the management of mentally ill detainees. The corporate headquarters of CMHS and CONMED are conveniently located in Hanover, Maryland, midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC. Our offices provide accommodations for executive and management staff, telemental health, and other support functions including Human Resources, Accounting and Payroll. All corporate staff members are accessible to all CMHS employees and to the administrative and management staffs all of contracted correctional facilities served. To provide support to all contracted correctional facilities, our President, Medical Director and Director of Quality Assurance are personally involved by direct site visits on a frequent and routine basis. In addition, Mental Health Coordinators and other members of our CMHS family from other facilities continuously lend reinforcement via telephone, teleconferencing, electronic mail and site visits as required. In essence, all of our contracted facilities gain a support network to enhance the quality of care afforded at each correctional facility. Our growth has been planned and steady. Today, CMHS employs predominantly licensed personnel, including Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Therapists, Licensed Professional Counselors, Licensed Social Workers and Case Managers.
